Our Heritage

Chief Sealth Our parish was originally founded in Suquamish at St. Peter Mission in 1863 with the mission church built in 1904. The mission is located next to the Native American cemetery where Chief Sealth, a baptized Catholic, is buried.

In 1956, in response to the expanding presence of the United States Navy in the region, Father Max Murray purchased property in Poulsbo and in 1968 a new parish was established. Olaf, a saint and former king of Norway, was chosen as our parish patron to acknowledge the Scandinavian roots of Poulsbo.  St. Olaf's Church was dedicated by Archbishop Thomas A. Connolly, on June 29, 1969.

At that time, St. Peter's became a mission of St. Olaf Parish. St. Peter Mission At present, our Parish serves over 1,100 Catholic families coming from Poulsbo, Kingston, North Silverdale, Hansville, Suquamish, Keyport, Port Gamble, Indianola, and Port Ludlow. Once again, as St. Olaf, our patron saint would say, "VELKOMEN"!
